I have a feeling that when a woman holds a really well paid job, she will find a way to cope with childcare.
I have also noticed an increase in female school principals and doctors, maybe it is all just a matter of time. On a practical level, I agree, older women with grown up kids may be a start. Interesting post as usual:)Brigid O'Connorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08646687391409208367noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7525848878710274126.post-19883900149203098652012-01-23T20:20:06.723+00:002012-01-23T20:20:06.723+00:00Thank you barbara for giving me some more insight ...Thank you barbara for giving me some more insight into this debate. I was like you, opposed to artificial means of getting more women into the Dail. The positions should be given on merit and NOT gender. However I can now see the other side to that argument. Women aren't necessarily putting themselves forward for election at all..

And I agree with Norah...the twitter women are fantastic. Such knowledge and insight. We should harness that too ;-)jazzygalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04069218745940412457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7525848878710274126.post-62356515577212652732012-01-23T19:39:40.652+00:002012-01-23T19:39:40.652+00:00Very well articulated article BarbaraVery well articulated article BarbaraDebbmasseynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7525848878710274126.post-73806843368542950532012-01-23T18:34:21.863+00:002012-01-23T18:34:21.863+00:00Ooh I would have loved to have attended this confe...Ooh I would have loved to have attended this conference! I would not have been in favour of gender quotas, but I have now changed my mind as a result of reading and hearing some excellent arguments in the past week or so. I know several fabulous women who could make amazing politicians. But they have children and, as I understand it, have ruled themselves out because of that. Hopefully one day that will not be necessary.Looking for Blue Skyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10010049814419812468noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7525848878710274126.post-39272990620627137942012-01-23T15:41:29.504+00:002012-01-23T15:41:29.504+00:00Thanks Norah and well said.. women are so bad at h...Thanks Norah and well said.. women are so bad at having the guts to put themselves forward.. Change needs to be a priority but as you say, it can't happen unless the first few pioneers embark on the struggle to balance both and make changes from within.

I hope there's a solution, but I can't see one that doesn't involve some degree of unpleasantness for someone!Ellen Brickleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01184391430927483100noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7525848878710274126.post-35293905732178241392012-01-23T12:06:13.458+00:002012-01-23T12:06:13.458+00:00From Norah B @talentcoop
Barbara - good job!.
I...From Norah B @talentcoop

Barbara - good job!.

If twitter is a reflection of women in Ireland, seems to me there's no shortage of 'big sisters', already seeing issues and just getting stuck in to sort them in their own unique way.

I've been struck by the strength and capability of women on twitter - a very equal platform - the support, encouragement shared and in fairness to them, the support of the many good men we associate with.

Like you, I'm suspicious of quotas, never quite comfortable with the engineered aspect of them, always a supporter of the best candidate doing the job.

Your comments on needing to be asked were somehow so subservient but maybe not that surprising. Whilst there is no shortage of female talent, through my eyes, some of even the best of that talent has a shortage of self belief and confidence. Many women, still conditioned to a default position which stops them seeing their own qualities and ability as good enough.

For me, it's maybe a lack of self belief and confidence that also holds women back from entering the political fray.

To carry on from Mary Lou Mcdonald's rallying call....

Sisters - if there's to be a revolution, start it by believing in yourself!

Trust me - YOU have what it takes!

Norah B @talentcoopAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
